Citizen Sleeper Review

Citizen Sleeper Review

The game, Citizen Sleepers is an indie game published by the company Fellow Traveler. In comparison to their other games, this one fits because it’s incredibly unique like the others. Citizen Sleeper is a role-playing game with tabletop game features influencing many of the mechanics in the game.

In a lot of ways, I consider the game non-linear simply based on the options of choices and how you want to prioritize everything. That being said all the options, choices, and very unique mechanics make this game not the easiest to just pick up and play. There’s a decent amount of learning involved because they made a game so different than many other mainstream ones.

You start the game with three class options, each like a tabletop game has slightly different stats to help boost your dice rolls or negatively affect them. All of your class options use mechanical bodies, while ironically you mainly interact with those with human forms. Speaking of the other characters, the designs are incredible. Each character looks hand-drawn and amazingly detailed leaving them in my opinion very memorable.

With each interaction and even within your thoughts you get dialogue and action choices and I’m a sucker for it. It’s definitely my kind of game but I can see many that wouldn’t like all the reading since there’s no voice acting.

In the beginning, this game might come off bleak and has some survival elements placed that increase the stakes, but as you play along and familiarize yourself with your environment you not only have hope but can start a fun but strategic life on Erlin’s Eye.

Overall, the game is well designed with a soothing and sometimes haunting soundtrack. It seems relaxing once you get the mechanics down and if you like TTRPG, dialogue options, lore, or strategy then I think you will love this game. Is it for everyone? Unfortunately, no; not everyone is willing to sit through all the reading and dialogue. Plain and simple, this game is not made for everyone, it’s made for a specific group and they hit the nail on the head!
